Kamakura: May 1, 2010

I visited Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is about 50 km from Tokyo.

Kamakura is historically famous because it had the nation's first Shogunate government (Kamakura Bakufu) from 12 to 14 century. It is also famous as a cultural city and as a high-quality residential area.

The Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine has been the center of the city since the Kamakura government era.

The shrine was originally built for the Minamoto family, the ruler of the Kamakura government. The old Kamakura City under the Kamakura Shogun regime developed around the shrine.

Today, the shrine is the symbol of the city and attracts many tourists. Many traditional events are held here.

Many wedding ceremonies are held here. I saw a bride and a groom in traditional costumes riding in a jinrikisha (man-drawn carriage).

The Wakamiya Oji Street runs from the shrine to the station. The street had been the main street of the city since the Kamakura Bakufu era.

There are many temples in the city.
Some of them are in the mountain. Some have mountains in their backs. I always feel history and nature when I visit Kamakura.

There are several walkways in the mountains. I enjoyed hiking. The green was fresh and the sky was blue.

The city faces the sea. Its back is surrounded by the mountains. The geographical condition means that the city is strong to defend itself from the enemies.
This is the reason why Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura government, decided to open his government here.

We can confirm the geography from the top of the mountain.
