Jindaiji Temple & Botanical Garden: April 29, 2010

The Golden Week, a period when we have a series of national holidays, has just started. Today is Showa Day to honor the birthday of the Showa Emperor.

I went to Jindaiji Temple and neighboring Jindai Boranical Garden in Chofu City, western Tokyo.

Jindai Botanical Garden is the capital’s only large-scale botanical garden. It has about 45000 plants and we can enjoy season’s flowers.

Azalea, dogwood, peony and wisteria had their flowers today. Cherry blossom was almost finished, but some trees (yama-zakura, which opens flowers late) still kept them. Some parts of the ground were covered with pink cherry petals.

The garden also has tulip tree wood, cedar wood and ponds. I saw people sitting around the pond and enjoying watching fish, turtles and the birds as well as the plants.

People were lying on the lawn of the rose garden and getting sun tan. The sunlight was strong and I felt “summer” rather than spring.

The Jindaiji Temple is one of Tendai (a school of Mahayana Buddhism) temples. It was first built in the 8th century.

The temple has many springs which provide clean water. The water resources helped the development of Japanese noodle industry in the area.

The noodle is now called Jindaiji Soba.

There are many noodle restaurants outside the temple. I took a soba lunch, which was of course nice.

There are gift shope, too. The most interesting one among them is Kitaro’s gift shop, which focuses on Gegege no Kitaro, a manga hero created by Shigeru Mizuki. Kitaro is a sprit monster (of good character). Mizuki lives in the area.
